Hana Mikoshi

The V&A are celebrating the local histories, material culture and making practices of Mino, a town in Gifu, Japan, famous for the production of washi paper. Together with Gifu Prefecture, the museum will bring washi paper elements of a Hana Mikoshi or ‘flower shrine’ to the Daylit Gallery. Adapted for display in the V&A by London-based Hayatsu architects, a sculptural seating installation will be decorated with 50,000 sakura-inspired Mino washi paper flowers, applied to the bamboo structure by hundreds of visitors to the V&A museum in workshops during the summer. This process echoes the annual Mino Matsuri festival, which has been taking place for hundreds of years, when local families, craftspeople, and intergenerational groups come together to create the paper shrines for the festival.
