Energy: Sparks from the Collection
From the 1850s, owning a pet was becoming more common among the British middle classes. Animals soon appeared in front of the camera and dogs quickly became a common subject for photographers. Dog owners could practise their
amateur camera skills at home on their loyal (and convenient) companions, or memorialise them in a studio portrait. Over time, dog photography became an area of professional expertise, shared and popularised through photographic manuals.
